Couplings

A coupling is a device used to connect the ends of two shafts in order to transmit power, while permitting some degree of misalignment, end movement, or both. Other uses include the reduction of shock load transmission from one shaft to another, protection against overloads, and alteration of vibration characteristics.

There are three basic categories of couplings. Rigid couplings are used when precise shaft alignment is required, flexible couples are designed to transmit torque while allow for misalignment, and torque limiting couplings protect against overtorque. Each category includes several coupling subcategories that are focused on specific applications.
